I know that I kept thinking all the same thoughts that many of you are. Will it work as well as the store bought items? I think that our perceptions of how things must look can dampen our enthusiasm to take that step and become more self-sufficient or just plan frugal.
So I took that jump and when I ran out of dish soap but still had a sink full of dishes to finish, I made my first
batch of Homemade Dish Soap. I would like to thank the Hillbilly Housewife for the great recipe that she had shared with us on her website.
Homemade Dish Soap Recipe #2
This version takes a little longer to make, but is even more frugal- 1/4 cup soap flakes or soap shavings (any bar soap will do)
- 2 cups water
- 1 tsp lemon juice or white vinegar
Allow the soap mixture to cool a bit, then stir in the lemon juice or vinegar. Keep it sitting in the pot until it is completely cooled, then pour it into an old dish soap bottle.
With either of these two homemade dish soap recipes you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to make them smell better. I find that if I use the lemon juice, I don’t need the essential oil. Bottled lemon juice works just fine.
I can not say enough about this great recipe. IT REALLY WORKS! I was working on pots and pans, to be honest in the back of my mind I kept thinking this isn't really going to work well. I am so sure of it. I thought of all the cheap store bought bottles of Dish Soap that I had bought that I ended up using tons of it because I didn't see bubbles.
We have been taught that in order for something to be clean it has to have had tons of bubbles. But honestly, we really don't. We also don't need to use as much as we think. Do you know that you really only need about a dime sized drop of shampoo to clean your whole head? YUP, but that is for another post.....
I fully want each and every one of you to take that leap of faith and really try these recipes and see for yourself.
